The
statuettes are the memorie and the fruit of the nostalgia of the artist Benito Badolato, Who by means of his works, comes back to life the characters of this childhood, He remebers the old customs and recreates the ancient trades almost disappeared in Calabria. |
When Benito was child the handicraftsmen were paid day by day and sat at the table with his own family. They went the person who makes chair bottoms out of straw, the grinder who regenerated the knifes to butcher the pig. |
| But the character the the artist remember with more love is "TURUZZO" a tall and thin beggar, with white beard and hair, a sweet and resigned smile on the wrinkled mouth. - I don't want that "TURUZZO" die I told myself and started to use the clay to shape his figure. |
| He worked with passion but the "TURUZZI" that went out from his hands were daunting. Some were cross-eyed, some with gaolbird face. |
| He destroyed them with anger and restarted the work, eventually "TURUZZO" re-emerged with his wrinkles and his mild expression: He seemed to want to thank the artist. From the, almost thirty years, He never stopped to work. |
He got married young, and started to work together with his wife in the workshop in Tropea
(Calabria). Benito model the characters and she makes their clothes hardned by a combination of resins.
Trough a long artistic experience their statuettes are now very nice.
